What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that use hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in your own skin—to restore volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours.

Unlike permanent dermal fillers, the products we use are safe, non-permanent, and allow for adjustments over time to maintain a natural appearance.

Dermal fillers combat signs of ageing and skin laxity by:

  • Filling in wrinkles
  • Plumping sunken cheeks
  • Adding lip volume

At Everyderm, our dermal filler treatments are performed by Dr Peter Prendergast, who has 20 years of experience and is a pioneer in advanced injection techniques. He has trained hundreds of doctors and authored numerous articles and book chapters on dermal fillers, ensuring you receive the highest level of care and expertise.

How Are They Applied?

Dermal filler injections involve strategically placing the filler into various layers of the skin and underlying tissues.

While the term “dermal fillers” suggests injection into the dermis, we use a broad approach, injecting from the superficial skin layers down to the bone when necessary. This allows for optimal results in restoring facial volume and enhancing contours.

We use premium products such as Teosyal, Belotero, and Radiesse, and select fillers based on their rheology and how they interact with and support tissues in the face.

Our injection technique may involve the use of fine needles or cannulas—a blunt-tipped instrument—for safer placement, especially in delicate areas like the tear trough and midface.

Which Areas of the Face Benefit from Dermal Fillers?

Under Eye Area

The tear trough area can show signs of ageing through hollowing and dark circles.

We utilise advanced techniques, including sub-muscular linear threads combined with polynucleotides and muscle relaxation of the pretarsal orbicularis oculi, to rejuvenate this delicate region.

Cheeks and Midface

Volume loss in the cheeks leads to a sagging appearance. By restoring volume with cheek dermal fillers, we create a lift that enhances facial features and provides a healthy glow. This also restores the aesthetically ideal Ogee curve.

Nose

Non-surgical rhinoplasty with dermal fillers can correct minor imperfections, straighten the nose bridge, and improve overall symmetry without the need for surgery. This a very delicate procedure that may seem simple, but it should only be performed by experienced doctors.

Mouth Area and Lips

We address marionette lines, smoker’s lines, and nasolabial folds by placing fillers around the mouth. Lip fillers add volume and definition, enhancing the natural shape for a more youthful and attractive smile.

Chin and Jawline

Dermal fillers can sculpt and define the chin and jawline, balancing facial proportions and reducing the appearance of a weak chin or jowls. Typically, they are not, in fact, injected into the dermis, but in the layer below the skin or above the bone, adding structural support and enhancing shadows.

Recommended Frequency

The longevity of dermal fillers varies depending on the area treated, the depth of placement, and the product used.

Typically, results last between 6 to 18 months. Regular assessments allow us to maintain your desired look, adjusting treatments as needed to ensure a consistent and natural appearance. We often see enhanced longevity after a second or third treatment.

Why Choose Everyderm?

PETER_EVERYDERM

At Everyderm, safety and natural results are our priorities. Dr Prendergast’s extensive experience ensures that complications are rare and manageable. He has pioneered techniques such as superficial microdroplet and perpendicular buttress methods, allowing for precise enhancement with minimal risk.

We believe in a comprehensive approach:

  • Personalised treatment plans: We provide a plan that offers beautiful, natural-looking results tailored to your skin, facial features and overall health as well as your own goals.
  • Expert assessment: Proper assessment and strategic use of fillers are key to the best outcomes. We may recommend alternative procedures, such as ablative laser resurfacing for diffuse wrinkles, to achieve optimal results.
  • No per millilitre charges: Our pricing is determined by the procedure, not the volume of filler used. This approach focuses on the quality of results rather than the quantity of products.
  • Premium products: We use only safe, non-permanent dermal fillers from reputable brands, ensuring the highest quality and safety.

Safety and Aftercare

Dermal fillers are generally safe when administered by experienced doctors. Temporary side effects may include redness, swelling, bruising, or mild discomfort at the injection site.

To minimise risks:

Pre-treatment advice: Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications before the procedure. If you are prone to cold sores, inform us so we can provide preventive care.

Post-treatment care: Refrain from touching or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun exposure, and saunas for a few days. We inject dermal fillers in the correct place—they do not require manipulation or massage afterwards.

Follow-up: We schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and address any concerns. The MeTime app is also an excellent way to keep the conversation open with your doctor.

Consultation

A thorough consultation is essential to discuss your goals, assess your facial anatomy, and determine the most suitable treatment options. We consider factors such as skin laxity, volume loss, and individual facial structures to create a personalised plan.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

Yes, when administered by experienced professionals like Dr Prendergast, dermal fillers are safe. We use only premium, non-permanent filler products, and our techniques minimise risks.

Do Dermal Fillers Hurt?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort. We use fine needles or cannulas and Dr Prendergast frequently performs regional nerve blocks to make sure you have a pain-free experience.

What Is the Cost of Dermal Fillers?

The cost varies based on the procedure and areas treated. We do not charge per millilitre but focus on providing the best results through expert techniques. Please contact us for detailed pricing. They usually start from €350.

Can dermal fillers make you blind?

There are several reports worldwide of severe complications due to vascular occlusion from fillers, including blindness. In experienced, medical professional hands, fillers are excellent products that are used to produce beautiful results safely. Complications arise with poor technique, lack of knowledge, or a careless approach to treatments. We strongly advise you to be treated by an expert medical professional only.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Fillers in the face usually last 6-24 months, and it depends on what kind of hyaluronic acid filler, where in the face,a nd at what depth the filler is placed.  Under-eye fillers tend to last longer than other areas such as the lips.  Fillers in the cheeks, jawline and chin usually have effects that last about 18 months.  Some people naturally break down these fillers faster than others.

Where are dermal fillers typically used?

Technically, dermal fillers are placed in the dermis (the top layer of skin).  However, in practice they can be placed subdermally or even on the bone (supraperiosteally).  At Everyderm we have experience using these fillers in all parts of the face including the temples, nose, tear trough hollows, cheeks, jawline, lips and, of course, the dermis.

How common are dermal fillers?

Dermal filler treatments are, year-on-year, the second most popular aesthetic treatment in the world after botulinum toxin injections.  With the increased use of these fillers worldwide has come a rise in complications.  This underpins the importance of seeking only experienced medical professionals for your dermal filler treatment.

How do dermal fillers work?

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers work by volumising and giving support to the delicate structures of the skin.  They plump, lift, strengthen, and hydrate tissues depending on how they are injected.  The cross-linking process used to bind chains of hyaluronic acid prevents them from disappearing in a few days like the natural hyaluronic acid molecules found in your skin, eyes, and joints.
