Under Eye Fillers

Ready to rejuvenate your under-eye area and achieve a more youthful appearance? Contact Everyderm in Dublin today to schedule your consultation and discover how our under-eye filler treatments can enhance your natural beauty.

This is an advanced treatment that requires lots of experience to get right. We see many women and men for under eye fillers in Dublin who demand the care of experts. Not everyone is suitable for under eye fillers, and we will assess you and give you your options.

Anatomy of the Area

The under-eye area, also known as the tear trough area, is a delicate anatomical region where the skin and muscular layers are very thin. This area loses volume as part of the ageing process, leading to a sunken appearance, dark shadows, and fine lines.

Volume loss in the tear troughs and the overlying skin can make individuals look tired or older than they are. Factors such as genetics, sleep deprivation, and lifestyle habits contribute to these changes, affecting both young people and older adults alike.

Midface volume loss frequently contributes to under-eye hollows. The dividing line between the lower eyelid and the upper cheek becomes more pronounced when the midface loses volume.

Addressing both the tear trough and the midface can enhance the overall rejuvenated appearance.

Preparation for the Procedure

Before your under-eye filler treatment, a thorough consultation is essential to determine if you are a good candidate.

We assess:

  • Your skin quality
  • The presence of blood vessels
  • Any overlying skin concerns.

It’s important to inform us about any history of cold sores or allergies

Avoid drinking alcohol and certain medications that may prolong bruising for at least 24 hours prior to the procedure. Our medical director, Dr Peter Prendergast, will assess you and determine if you are a suitable candidate for under-eye fillers.

Technique

Our under-eye filler treatment utilises hyaluronic acid fillers specifically designed for the delicate under-eye area. Dr Prendergast employs fine needles for nerve blocks and cannulas to perform filler injections with precision.

The filler is placed deep beneath the muscle to add volume and smooth out hollows. This technique reduces the risk of injuring blood vessels and ensures even distribution of the filler.

We may also recommend complementary treatments such as polynucleotides, skin boosters, or Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) to enhance skin quality and stimulate collagen production.

In cases where blue veins are visible, especially at the outer part of the under-eye area, we have lasers that can treat these blood vessels effectively. Combining treatments can provide optimal results for various skin concerns.

What to Expect?

The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes. On the day of your treatment, a topical anaesthetic or nerve blocks are applied to numb the area, ensuring you barely feel any discomfort.

The filler injections are carefully administered in the areas of hollowing or darkness to address volume loss. Fine lines on the surface can simultaneously be treated with either skin boosters or muscle-relaxing injections if the lines are caused by muscular contraction.

Immediately after the treatment, you may notice slight swelling or redness at the injection site. These common side effects typically subside quickly, and most patients experience minimal downtime.

Bumpiness may occur but usually resolves after a couple of days. If any persistent bumpiness remains, it can be gently massaged or, if necessary, corrected with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which dissolves the filler.

How Long Does It Last?

Under-eye fillers provide long-lasting results, typically lasting between 12 to 18 months

The longevity depends on factors such as the type of hyaluronic acid filler used, your metabolism, and lifestyle. Regular follow-up treatments can maintain a rejuvenated appearance, and our treatment plan will be tailored to your specific needs.

Aftercare

Proper aftercare helps reduce swelling and optimise results:

Cold compress: You can apply a cold compress after the numbness of the injections subsides to reduce swelling and minimise bruising. Howevedon’tn’t apply ice.

Avoid strenuous exercise: Refrain from intense physical activity for 24 hours to prevent increased blood flow to the area and unwanted swelling.

Gently massage: Unless advised otherwise, avoid massaging the treated area to allow the filler to settle.

Avoid drinking alcohol: Continue to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours post-treatment.

Eye cream: Use recommended eye creams to hydrate and support the overlying skin. Our team will recommend some excellent products for this delicate area.

Normal activities: Most patients can resume normal activities immediately, experiencing minimal disruption to their daily life.

Risks of Complications

Under-eye filler treatments are generally safe when performed by experienced practitioners like Dr Prendergast.

Potential risks include:

  • Bruising and swelling: These are the most common side effects and usually resolve within a few days.
  • Allergic reactions: These are rare with hyaluronic acid fillers but possible; contact us if you are concerned about excessive swelling under the eyes, and we will assess you straight away.
  • Asymmetry or lumps: This may occur for the first few days, but if it persists, we will correct the lump or asymmetry.
  • Blood vessel occlusion: Extremely rare; prompt treatment with hyaluronidase can resolve the issue. We use safe techniques in this area to reduce any risk of inadvertent injury to blood vessels.

Our clinic prioritises your safety. We take all necessary precautions to minimise risks and provide detailed aftercare instructions.

Recommended Frequency

To maintain the desired results, treatments are typically recommended every 12-18 months. The frequency may vary based on individual factors and how your body metabolises the filler.

A personalised treatment plan will be developed during your consultation.

Why Choose Everyderm?

PETER_EVERYDERM

Dr. Prendergast brings extensive expertise in under-eye filler treatments, ensuring precise injections and natural-looking results.

Each patient undergoes a comprehensive assessment to evaluate the delicate anatomy of the under-eye area, including orbital fat pads, midface volume, and skin changes. Advanced techniques, such as the use of cannulas placed deep into the muscle, enhance safety and minimise risks.

For optimal outcomes, complementary treatments like polynucleotides, skin boosters, PRP, or laser therapy may be recommended, and lower blepharoplasty surgery is available at our sister clinic in Dundrum.

To ensure comfort, nerve blocks are used during treatments, and our team provides ongoing support. With minimal downtime, these efficient procedures allow patients to quickly resume their normal activities.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Am I a Good Candidate for Under Eye Fillers?

Good candidates are individuals experiencing volume loss, dark shadows, or hollows under the eyes due to ageing or genetics. Both men and women, including young people affected by these concerns, can benefit. A thorough consultation will determine if this non-surgical cosmetic procedure is suitable for you.

How Can Under Eye Fillers Be Combined with Other Treatments?

Under-eye fillers can be complemented with treatments like polynucleotides, skin boosters, and PRP to improve skin quality and stimulate collagen production. We may also address midface volume loss to enhance the overall effect. Laser treatments are available to treat blue veins in the area.

How Many Syringes Are Needed, and How Long Does It Last?

Every face is different. Some people require more volume than others, but technique and plane of injection is more important to get beautiful results. Typically, very small volumes are required, unless the midface is being enhanced as an adjunctive procedure.

How Does Under-Eye Filler Work?

Under-eye filler works by adding subtle volume, lifting out the hollow area so that the eyelids blend seamlessly with the cheek.  When the filler is placed in the right level in the tissues – usually below the orbicularis oculi muscle, the area smooths out without looking uneven or lumpy.

Which Filler Is Best for Under the Eyes?

Our doctors believe that the best filler for under eyes is the one that gives enough lift to reduce shadows but one that does not absorb too much water.  We use hyaluronic acid fillers with a rheology and G-prime that gives beautiful before and after results without causing problems like the Tyndall effect – a blueish discolouration that can occur in inexperienced hands.

How to Prepare for an Under-Eye Filler Procedure?

You should stop taking herbal supplements, vitamins and avoid anti-inflammatories for at least a week before your under eye filler treatment if you want to reduce the chance of bruising. Plan to take it easy for the rest of the day after your treatment.
